Port of
King’s Lynn
The Port of King’s Lynn is adding new chapters to a rich history
that spans more than a thousand years. Centuries after
Henry VIII wrested control of the maritime community from
the Bishop of Norwich and changed its name from Bishop’s
Lynn to King’s Lynn, the port continues to make a vital
contribution to the wellbeing of the East Anglian region.
ABP’s £3.8 million investment in the port’s Alexandra Silo
complex builds on the same strategic advantages offered
down the years by this port located on the Wash, in the midst
of the strategic trading border that is the UK’s East Coast.
The 25,000 tonne capacity dockside silo at the centre of this
development bonds modern technology and ancient skills.
Used to store and process malting barley and other cereals, the
high input, high output facility – equipped with state-of-the-art
laboratory services – allows local growers to deliver directly to
the quayside, reducing inland transportation and storage costs
and improving efficiency. The first of its kind established within
a port, the complex has proved a significant stimulus to
valuable export and domestic markets.
The Alexandra Silo complex is but one of a cluster of
agrarian facilities at the Port of King’s Lynn which make their
own contributions to the growing success of the region’s
farming industry. In addition, a 6,000 tonne capacity silo plus
supplementary flat store for cereals and pulses are located in
the port and another four purpose built bulk stores provide
space for up to 13,000 tonnes of cereals and agribulks. Other
stores offer a further 26,000 tonnes of capacity for agribulks at
this seaport set in a rich rural landscape.
Dry bulks handled by King’s Lynn also include aggregates
which are accommodated in dedicated covered and open
storage areas, both in dock and on the River Great Ouse.
Perfectly positioned to receive import cargoes of forest
products from Scandinavia and the Baltic States, the port has a
long established expertise in handling and distributing timber.
