Port of
Fleetwood
The traditional fishing port of Fleetwood looks out to sea at a
very different catch that could transform its future. Atop and
beneath the waves of Morecambe Bay on Britain’s North
West Coast, is the potential to set the port on a new and
exciting course.
Together with Lancashire County Council, ABP is looking to
reshape the profile of Fleetwood’s future, exploring the
prospects of new ventures like offshore gas and wind energy,
and developing freight services and other maritime operations.
The offshore gas industry is a significant feature of the
economic seascape of Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea
beyond. With other green energy initiatives, it represents a
potential that ABP is seeking to trawl, countering unfettered
market influences such as the withdrawal of the Stena Line
daily ro-ro service between Fleetwood and Larne.
Using for bait the port’s 12.5 ha of hard standing,
sheltered haven, ro-ro berth with 180 tonnes of
loading capacity and trunk road links to the national
motorway network – all within easy steaming of the
seabed sources of gas and other renewable energy
potential – Fleetwood is on a promise of opportunity.
But the name of Fleetwood continues to be
synonymous with fish. For more than 90 years the
port has been the setting for a busy fish market,
with its auction hall handling around 5,000 tonnes
of fish a year, now delivered overland from Scottish
and other ports looking to take advantage of
Fleetwood’s ideal location with its links to major
population centres to the north, south and east.
And a new and distinctly different generation of
small boats now shares the water space once
occupied by a host of fishing smacks. ABP’s Fleetwood Haven
Marina – part of an exciting waterfront development – offers
420 fully serviced berths for yachts and motor cruisers in a
sheltered, enclosed dock location providing comprehensive
facilities including a dedicated clubhouse.
