north of the country and as a key hub for the frozen food
industry, focused on GB’s most advanced fish market.
Vehicles fresh off production lines in Britain and abroad are
imported and exported via the Port of Grimsby, which handles
almost 400,000 roll-on roll-off units a year and is the major
sliproad into the north of the country for arrivals such as
Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda. The port is also the
freeway for exports of Toyota cars manufactured at the
company’s Derbyshire plant and for imports of the French
built Toyota Yaris.
Currently, vehicle operations are focused around two
dedicated ro-ro berths inside the enclosed docks, plus a
terminal providing pre-delivery inspection and comprehensive
fitting services for vehicle accessories.
ABP is investing £25 million in expanding facilities for the
car trade by developing a riverside terminal outside the
enclosed docks, enabling the port to accommodate vessels
carrying in excess of 3,000 vehicles. The new Grimsby River
Terminal will significantly increase the port’s capacity.
Combined with ABP’s Humber port of Immingham,
Grimsby is already the UK’s busiest car handling centre, moving
nearly 600,000 units a year.
