Port of
Hull
Fresh winds are whipping up the mighty Humber Estuary,
bringing about a significant shift in the nature of the hustle
and bustle of one of Britain’s pre-eminent ports.
The Port of Hull is the fulcrum of a maritime industry that
down the years has created employment and prosperity for the
city and region it serves. It is now set to forge a new era,
making a vital contribution to a flagship industry in a wave of
global renewable energy initiatives.
The port is the focal point for the planned development of
the UK’s largest offshore wind turbine manufacturing facility on
a reshaped waterside complex ideally equipped to receive
imported supplies, manufacture components and dispatch
turbines for installation at sea.
Siemens, one of the world’s leading suppliers of this
renewable energy technology, announced in early 2011 its
choice of the Green Port Hull complex at Alexandra Dock as the
preferred location for a new offshore wind turbine
manufacturing and export facility.
The investment in
Green Port Hull is
estimated to be £220
million, of which
£80 million is for the
plant which is expected
to employ 700 people. The location – offering the means to
manufacture, pre-assemble, operate and maintain offshore
wind farms – is an ideal setting, served by a natural deepwater
channel and positioned close to all the key Round 2 and 3
offshore windfarm sites in the mid-North Sea.
In addition, the Port of Hull – part of a group with more
than 30 years’ experience of serving the UK’s offshore energy
industry – has another 300 ha of dockside land at the port’s
Albert Dock, Queen Elizabeth Dock and Paull site, suitable for
manufacturing, assembly and storage of turbines.
Meanwhile, the Port of Hull continues its role as one of the
UK’s prime gateways to Northern Europe, Scandinavia and a
